A joint expedition of Russian and Kyrgyz scientists has unearthed a medieval Muslim necropolis and remnants of structures at the bottom of Issyk-Kul Lake. The exploration, conducted in autumn 2025 near the ancient Toru-Aygyr complex, revealed artifacts like ceramics and bricks, providing evidence of a significant settlement on the Great Silk Road that was submerged by the lake's waters.
The discovery confirms the historical importance of the location, shedding light on the ancient trade route and cultural exchanges that occurred in the region. This finding offers valuable insights into the past, highlighting the intersection of different civilizations along the Silk Road and the impact of natural changes over time on human settlements.
