Major Robberies of World Museums:

A 61-year-old pensioner stole a painting from the British National Gallery in 1961. He took the artwork out through an open window in the men's restroom and later surrendered to the police in 1965, promising to return the painting for a £140,000 charity donation.

Criminals entered Mexico's National Museum of Anthropology in 1985 through an unprotected ventilation system and stole 124 artifacts. The theft was discovered the next day, and years later, the thieves, who were students, were caught, leading to the recovery of most treasures.

In 1990, two men in police uniforms robbed the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in the USA, disarming and tying up guards before looting for about 80 minutes. They successfully stole 13 pieces of art that remain missing to this day.
