In 2020, in the constellation of Draco, approximately 80 light-years away from Earth, a gas giant named WD 1856 b was discovered. It is similar in size to Jupiter but remarkably 7 times larger than its star. This is because the gas giant orbits around a white dwarf — the final stage in the evolution of a Sun-like star that has already shed most of its mass.
The orbit of WD 1856 b is extremely compact — the gas giant is located 50 times closer to its star than Earth. Due to this close distance, the exoplanet completes an orbit around its star in just 34 hours.
